Piloda Group and Nautilus: an integrated industrial model for the redevelopment of Manfredonia Port
Manfredonia – As part of Italy’s national Port Plan, Piloda Group, through its Building division, and Nautilus are advancing the redevelopment of the Bacino ad Alti Fondali (BAF) in Manfredonia through an innovative construction model designed to maintain full port operations throughout the works. The project combines maritime engineering, shipbuilding capabilities and integrated logistics to modernise a strategic 2.5-kilometer offshore pier while supporting the development of the local port system.
The project is delivered through the Piloda–Nautilus partnership, now structured within NA.VE. Scarl, and relies on three interconnected operational hubs: Manfredonia for offshore installation, Piloda Shipyard in Brindisi for assembly and logistics, and specialised external production centres for steel components. Existing reinforced-concrete structures are progressively replaced with next-generation steel decks, allowing construction activities to proceed without interrupting the handling of wind-energy components and other port operations.
The initiative also reflects a wider commitment to environmental sustainability, energy transition and local development. Demolished concrete is recovered and reintroduced into the production cycle, while off-site assembly reduces logistics, congestion and environmental impact at Manfredonia. Around 90% of the workforce is locally based, with direct and indirect employment expected to reach up to 200 people. Completion is scheduled for mid-2027, with the project intended as a replicable model for complex port infrastructure across Italy.
Massimo Paganelli, Project Lead: “Port infrastructure and shipbuilding are deeply interconnected: infrastructure supports shipyards, while shipyards generate industrial value and new opportunities for ports. Manfredonia demonstrates how integrated expertise, local capabilities and long-term industrial planning can contribute to the development of Southern Italy’s maritime economy.”
