Launch of the Matteo Caracciolini Training Ship
On May 2024, the Matteo Caracciolini training ship was launched after seven years of restoration work by the "Scugnizzi a Vela" project, a social initiative focused on integrating at-risk youth in Naples. The project, born from a partnership between the Italian Navy and the Juvenile Justice Department, aims to teach valuable maritime skills to young people through the restoration of historic wooden vessels.
The Matteo Caracciolini, a two-masted ship originally acquired by the Lega Navale of Ischia in 2014, underwent extensive restoration at Piloda Group's shipyard, where it became a training ground for both the youths and shipyard workers. The collaboration involved hundreds of hours of work by volunteers, professionals, and skilled craftsmen.
The launch event celebrated the completion of the restoration and marked a significant step in the integration and employment of young people. Two "Scugnizzi" were offered employment contracts with local companies, Costagliola and Piloda Group. The project received support from various partners, including the Grimaldi Foundation and UniCredit, and is now part of the "Out of the Streets…! Let's go to sea" initiative, which provides ongoing opportunities for youth through maritime training.
This initiative highlights the power of the sea as a tool for social recovery, providing young people with skills, discipline, and a path to a brighter future.
