Ischia revamps its historic port: a new promenade and flood protection project begins
To mark the 170th anniversary of its Bourbon port, Ischia has launched an ambitious redevelopment of the Right Bank. Spearheaded by Piloda Group’s Building Division, the project will enhance tourism appeal while tackling persistent flooding issues. A scenic promenade will connect the harbor to San Pietro Beach, with completion expected by 2025.
Ischia’s historic port, inaugurated in 1854 by King Ferdinand II, is undergoing a significant transformation to improve both its functionality and visual appeal. The redevelopment of the Right Bank aims to protect the area from frequent high tides while creating a new pedestrian-friendly waterfront that enhances the island’s tourist experience.
A key feature of the project is the construction of a panoramic promenade that will seamlessly link the port to San Pietro Beach, forming part of a broader pedestrian ring connecting Via Francesco Buonocore, Via Roma, and Via Porto. The intervention will make the waterfront more accessible and attractive to both locals and visitors, turning it into one of Ischia’s must-see locations.
Mayor Vincenzo Ferrandino highlights the importance of the initiative, emphasizing its dual role in boosting tourism and solving long-standing flooding problems that have affected local businesses. The redevelopment also includes a 50 cm lava stone retaining wall to protect restaurants and shops from high tides, improved pedestrian pathways, and upgraded public spaces with new seating areas and lighting.
Further interventions will revamp key areas such as the Argita Shipyard, which will gain a dedicated space for public events, and the Agostino Lauro Dock, where new shelters and pedestrian pathways will enhance passenger comfort. Architect Carla Mattera describes the project as a fusion of Ischia’s maritime heritage and modern urban planning, integrating natural elements with functional design.
Piloda Group, renowned for its expertise in construction and restoration, leads this transformation, with previous projects including work at the Politecnico di Milano, the port of Manfredonia, and historic restorations in Procida. With completion set for 2025, the redevelopment of Ischia’s port marks a new chapter in the island’s history, positioning it as a Mediterranean hub that balances tradition with innovation.
